French Alps Family Road Trip Itinerary: The Ultimate 10-Day Guide

This French Alps family road trip itinerary is the perfect 10-day winter guide for families travelling from England who want a mix of city stops, beginner-friendly skiing, and scenic drives. We travelled with our 11-year-old and quickly learned that flexibility is key, especially when skiing is a new experience for part of the family.

This guide includes route planning, overnight stops, skiing tips, and real-life advice to help you enjoy a smooth and memorable winter adventure. Whether youโ€™re new to skiing or simply want a fun family holiday, this itinerary brings together our previous winter travel posts into one complete, practical route from England to the Alps and Switzerland.

Trip Overview

  • Duration: 10 days
  • Total distance: ~1,400 miles (round trip)
  • Transport: Eurotunnel + family car
  • Travelling: Two adults + one child (11 years old)
  • Main stops: Dijon โ†’ Grenoble โ†’ Villard-de-Lans โ†’ Geneva โ†’ Orlรฉans
  • Best time: Late December (school holidays)
  • Budget note: Approx. ยฃ60 motorway tolls one-way to Grenoble

Eurotunnel tip: Crossing times are fixed and far less affected by weather, which made planning easier when travelling with winter gear. For our route to Grenoble via Dijon, Eurotunnel was faster and more convenient than ferries.

Day 1: England โ†’ Dijon

Crossing the Channel via Eurotunnel, we set off to Dijon, the first stop on our 10-day winter family road trip itinerary from England.

  • Driving time: ~6 hours from Calais
  • Why Dijon: A manageable first day and a chance to explore a French city instead of pushing on too far
  • Highlight: Evening and morning walks through Dijonโ€™s historic Gothic streets
  • Where to eat: Toasty Brunch โ€” great for breakfast and Instagram-friendly

Day 2: Dijon โ†’ Grenoble

After a relaxed morning walk and some shopping, we continued south to Grenoble.

  • Food tip: Chez Marius โ€” excellent, family-friendly meals
  • Why Grenoble: Known as the Capital of the French Alps and a practical base for beginners
  • Our strategy: Grenoble gave us flexibility. If skiing hadnโ€™t worked out, we still had museums, shops, and restaurants to enjoy
  • Access to skiing: Villard-de-Lans is just 40 minutes away

Days 3โ€“7: Grenoble Base, Skiing & Geneva

Grenoble served as the perfect base for the most exciting part of our French Alps family road trip itinerary, allowing us to balance time on the slopes with city exploration.

Grenoble became our main base for skiing and exploring the region. During this period, we also made a spontaneous one-night stop in Geneva to celebrate New Yearโ€™s Eve. This part of the trip is a key highlight of our French Alps family road trip itinerary, providing the perfect balance between the slopes, city sights, and downtime.

Villard-de-Lans: Scouting & Preparation

Before skiing, we visited the resort to:

  • Check road and snow conditions
  • See beginner areas and slope layout
  • Organise ski passes and rental equipment

Villard-de-Lans is ideal for beginners and intermediates. While I stayed on beginner slopes, my husband (an experienced skier) enjoyed longer runs.

Ski Lessons & Practice

My son and I took lessons with ESF (ร‰cole du Ski Franรงais).

Important note: Our first lesson was with a trainee instructor. Later, we switched to a fully qualified (diplรดmรฉ) instructor and the difference was huge. If youโ€™re an adult beginner, I strongly recommend booking a diplรดmรฉ instructor from the start.

The resort offers:

  • A dedicated ESF beginner slope
  • A public beginner slope with a pommel lift
  • Green, blue, and red slopes (with intersections suitable for mixed abilities)

Our daily routine:

  • 2 hours with the instructor
  • Optional independent practice (~40 minutes)
  • My husband skied bigger slopes with our son while I practised or rested in the sun

Gear we used:

  • Me: helmet, gloves, boots, skis, poles
  • Husband: boots, skis, poles
  • Son: helmet, boots, skis, poles

Spontaneous Geneva Stop (New Yearโ€™s Eve)

  • Hotel: IntercityHotel Geneva
  • Parking: Available
  • Tram stop: 3 minutes away โ€” perfect for fireworks by the bridge

Days 8โ€“10: Orlรฉans

Instead of driving 800 km straight back to England, we spent two nights in Orlรฉans. Highlights included:

  • Cobblestone streets and half-timbered houses
  • Winter walks through storybook corners
  • Cafรฉs and local spots perfect for a cosy break
  • Another French city to fall in love with (after Metz and Strasbourg)
  • A relaxed final drive back to Eurotunnel and home

This stop completed our 10-day winter family road trip itinerary from England, proving that even long drives can include charming and memorable stops along the way.

Weather, Snow & Driving Conditions

  • Enough snow in Villard-de-Lans for skiing, though light
  • No snow chains needed; we used all-season tyres
  • Coldest nights reached โ€“7ยฐC, with milder daytime temperatures

Packing & Practical Family Tips

  • Winter boots โ€” worn almost every day
  • Thermal clothing (Marks & Spencer thermals were excellent)
  • Extra blankets, jackets, and spare shoes for cold evenings
  • Water, snacks, and pastries for the car (learned this the hard way)
  • Small electric heater/fan for hotel rooms (once we had a stuck thermostat at 20ยฐC)

Reality Check & Recommendations

  • The backup plan matters: Staying in Grenoble meant we werenโ€™t โ€œstuckโ€ on the mountain if skiing hadnโ€™t worked out
  • Resort vs city base: If your family is fully committed to skiing, staying in Villard-de-Lans will save daily driving
  • Driving: All-season tyres worked for us, but always carry chains just in case
  • Lessons: Book a diplรดmรฉ instructor for adult beginners โ€” it genuinely changes the experience

Following this French Alps family road trip itinerary proves that a 10-day winter journey from England doesnโ€™t have to mean committing to a single remote resort or locking yourself into a rigid plan. By combining city stops with a flexible skiing base in Grenoble, we were able to learn, explore, and adapt as we wentโ€”which made all the difference when skiing was a new experience for our family.

Adding unexpected highlights like Geneva on New Yearโ€™s Eve and a slower ending in Orlรฉans turned the journey itself into a highlight, rather than just a long drive between destinations. If you are looking for a balance of sightseeing, skiing, and relaxation, this French Alps family road trip itinerary provides a practical roadmap for a truly memorable family holiday.

Sometimes, the best trips arenโ€™t the most ambitious ones, but the ones that leave room to breathe.
